Bradford R. Wood

Bradford Ripley Wood (born September 3, 1800 in Westport , Connecticut , † September 26, 1889 in Albany , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bradford Ripley Wood attended community schools and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1824 . Afterwards he worked as a teacher and gave lectures. He studied law at Litchfield Law School, Connecticut. He was admitted to the bar in 1827 and then began practicing in Albany. On May 29, 1827 he became a solicitor at the New York Court of Chancery and rose on June 6, 1830 to the Chancellor at the same court. He was counselor at the New York Supreme Court in 1835 and at the United States Supreme Court in 1845 . In 1844 he was on the Albany County's Board of Supervisors .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1844 for the 29th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Daniel D. Barnard on March 4, 1845 . In 1846 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after 3 March 1847 Congress of.

In 1851 he was president of the Young Men's Temperance Society . Wood served as a trustee at Union College, Williams College, and Albany Law School . He was the vice president of Albany Medical College . In 1856 he was one of the founders of the Republican Party in New York. He was vice president of the American Home Missionary Society and founder of the First Congregational Church in Albany. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him on March 22, 1861, to succeed James M. Buchanan as envoy ( United States Minister ) to Denmark - a position he held until November 15, 1865. Wood died on September 26, 1889 in Albany and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery .
