Philip B. Low

Philip Burrill Low (born May 6, 1836 in Chelsea , Massachusetts , † August 23, 1912 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Philip Burrill Low attended public schools and graduated from high school. He volunteered during the Civil War , was appointed acting Ensign in the US Navy , and served in the North Atlantic Squadron in 1862 and 1863 . After his resignation he went on to do business in Boston until 1865 . At that point he moved to New York City, where he did shipping business. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1894 for the 54th Congress he was elected in the 15th electoral district of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Isidor Straus on March 4, 1895 . After a successful re-election he suffered in 1898 a defeat and withdrew from the after March 3, 1899 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he went back to his previous activities in the maritime business in New York City until his death. He died there on August 23, 1912 and was then buried in Woodlawn Cemetery . About two years later the First World War broke out.
