Henry Bell Van Rensselaer
Henry Bell Van Rensselaer (born May 14, 1810 in Albany , New York , † March 23, 1864 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American officer and politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Stephen Van Rensselaer was his father.
Career
Henry Bell Van Rensselaer was born and raised in Albany about two years before the outbreak of the British-American War . In 1831 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point . On July 1, 1831, he received an officer license to become a Brevet - Second Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of the US Infantry , where he served until his resignation on January 27, 1832. Then he worked in agriculture at Ogdensburg . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .
In the 1840 congressional elections for the 27th Congress , Van Rensselaer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Fine on March 4, 1841 . He retired from the after March 3, 1843 Congress of.
In the following time he worked in mining companies. After the outbreak of the civil war , he signed up as a brigadier general in the Union Army . He was appointed Chief of Staff to General Winfield Scott . He was promoted in 1862 to the Colonel and he was inspector general - a position which he held until his death. He died on March 23, 1864 in Cincinnati and was then buried in the Grace Episcopal Churchyard in Jamaica on Long Island .
