Oliver Belmont
Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont (born November 12, 1858 in New York City , † June 10, 1908 in Hempstead , Nassau County , New York ) was an American politician and millionaire. He was the son of the Alzey- born banker and politician August Belmont and brother of Perry Belmont and August Belmont junior . He got his name from his maternal great-uncle, Oliver Hazard Perry .
In 1890 he inherited part of his father's fortune. On behalf of Belmont, Richard Morris Hunt built the Belcourt Castle estate in Newport from 1891 to 1894 , which is modeled on castles in various European countries and architectural epochs. From 1901 to 1903 Belmont represented New York's 13th Congressional electoral district in the US House of Representatives . In addition, he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York.
On January 11, 1896, Belmont married Alva Vanderbilt , the ex-wife of William Kissam Vanderbilt.
After his death, Belmont was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx . His mausoleum , designed by Richard Morris Hunt, is an exact copy of the Hubertus Chapel in Amboise Castle .
