Perry Belmont (born December 28, 1851 in New York City , † May 25, 1947 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an American politician , diplomat and officer . He was the son of the Alzey- born banker and politician August Belmont , brother of Oliver Belmont and August Belmont junior .

Belmont who graduated Everest Military Academy in Hamden ( Connecticut ) and graduated in 1872 at the Harvard University and in 1876 at the Columbia Law School . He then practiced as a lawyer in New York for five years . His law firm partners were his cousin, the writer Arthur Dudley Vinton , and George Frelinghuysen, who later became President of the Ballantine Brewery .

From March 1881 to December 1889, Belmont was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the Democratic Party , where he presided over the Foreign Affairs Commission from 1885 to 1887. Between February and May 1889 he was the United States Ambassador to Spain . Belmont served as Major and Inspector General of the First Division during the Spanish-American War of 1898 and as a captain during World War I.
