Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence (born February 28, 1791 in Flushing , Queens , New York , † February 20, 1861 there ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives in 1833 and 1834 .

Career

Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence attended community schools. In 1812 he moved to New York City , where he did commercial business. His son, James Ogden Lawrence, was born in 1824. Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction. In the congressional elections of 1832 he was in the third electoral district of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he on March 4, 1833, the successor to Churchill C. Cambreleng , Campbell P. White and Gulian C. Verplanck took who previously together represented the third district in the US House of Representatives. However, he resigned on May 14, 1834 from his congress seat. Then he was Mayor of New York City between 1834 and 1837. He was a director of several banks and trust companies . Between 1845 and 1849 he was a collector of customs in the Port of New York . He died in Flushing on February 20, 1861 and was buried in the Bayside family cemetery. His cousin was Congressman Effingham Lawrence .
