Denis Michael Hurley (born March 14, 1843 in Limerick , Ireland , † February 26, 1899 in Hot Springs , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1898 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Denis Michael Hurley was born in Limerick during the reign of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland . At that time the Thames Tunnel in London was opened. His family emigrated to the United States in 1850 and settled in Brooklyn . Four years later she moved to New York City , where Denis Michael Hurley attended public schools. He returned to Brooklyn a year after the Civil War . He was a trained carpenter and worked as a building contractor. In 1879 and 1899 he attended the Republican State Conventions as a delegate . He ran for a seat in the New York State Assembly as a Republican in 1880, without success .

In the congressional election of 1894 , Hurley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded John M. Clancy on March 4, 1895 . He was re-elected in 1896 , but suffered a defeat in his third candidacy in 1898 . He died a few days before the end of his second term on February 26, 1899 in Hot Springs and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.
