Thomas William Cumming (1814 or 1815 in Frederick , Maryland , † October 13, 1855 in Brooklyn , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas William Cumming was born in Frederick during the British-American War . His family then moved to Georgia . On May 19, 1832, he joined the US Navy , where he initially held the rank of midshipman . After a promotion to Passed Midshipman he served so from June 23, 1838 until his departure on February 23, 1841. During his time in the US Navy, he took part in the Wilkes Expedition in 1838 . He then moved to Brooklyn . There he worked between 1843 and 1853, first as a pharmacist and importer of medicines in New York City and then went on to do business. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1852 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded Obadiah Bowne on March 4, 1853 . He retired from the after March 3, 1855 Congress of. He died a few months later on October 13, 1855 in Brooklyn and was buried there in Green-Wood Cemetery .
