John W. Lawrence
John Watson Lawrence (* August 1800 in Flushing , New York ; † December 20, 1888 there ) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Watson Lawrence was born and raised in Flushing in the early 19th century . He attended local schools and was then as clerk ( mercantile clerk working). Between 1835 and 1845 he was president of the town of Flushing. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1840 and 1841 . He did extensive banking. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1844 , Lawrence was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Selah B. Strong on March 4, 1845 . Since he refused to run again in 1846 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1847 . Lawrence also turned down a Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of New York. He then went back to his banking business. Between 1860 and 1875 he was a trustee for Flushing. He died there on December 20, 1888 and was buried in Flushing Cemetery .
