Luther C. Carter

Luther Cullen Carter (born February 25, 1805 in Bethel , Maine , † January 3, 1875 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Luther Cullen Carter was born in Bethel seven years before the outbreak of the British-American War . His family then moved to New York City, where he later went into commercial business. He sat on the Board of Education in New York City in 1853 . When he retired from business life, he settled in Long Island City , where he worked in agriculture. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1858 Carter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded John A. Searing on March 4, 1859 . In 1860 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1861 Congress of. During that time he chaired the Committee on District of Columbia . Civil war broke out about a month after he ended his term in office . He died in New York City on January 3, 1875 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery , Brooklyn .
