John Lefferts

John Lefferts (born December 17, 1785 in Brooklyn , New York , † September 18, 1829 there ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1815 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Lefferts was born and raised in Brooklyn about two years after the end of the Revolutionary War . He attended public schools. Nothing more is known about this from his private life. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the congressional election of 1812 Lefferts was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Silas Wood on March 4, 1813 . Since he refused to run again in 1814, he left the Congress after March 3, 1815 . Lefferts served in the New York Senate between 1820 and 1825 . During this time he took part in 1821 as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of New York. He died in Brooklyn on September 18, 1829 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery .
