Joseph M. Belford

Joseph McCrum Belford (born August 5, 1852 in Mifflintown , Pennsylvania , † May 3, 1917 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph McCrum Belford was born in Mifflintown approximately nine years before the outbreak of the Civil War . He attended Lycoming College in Williamsport and then graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle in 1871 . In 1884 he moved to Long Island , where he taught at the Franklinville and Riverhead Academies . He studied law and began practicing in Riverhead in 1889 after receiving his license to practice law. In the following years he worked as a secretary ( secretary ) and Chairman of the Suffolk County Republican Committee operates as well as legal training ( clerk ) at the guardianship court ( surrogate court ).

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1896 Belford was elected to the US House of Representatives in the first constituency of New York, where he succeeded Richard C. McCormick on March 4, 1897 . Since he refused to run again in 1898 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1899 . The following year he attended the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia as a delegate . Belford returned to Riverhead as a lawyer and went into banking. Between 1904 and 1910 he worked as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Suffolk County. He died on May 3, 1917 in Grand Central Station, New York City. His body was then interred in Riverhead Cemetery , Riverhead. His cousin was Congressman James B. Belford .
