William Carney (born July 1, 1942 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York - † May 22, 2017 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1987 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Carney was born and raised in New York City during World War II . He attended St. Catherine of Genoa School in Brooklyn and graduated from Delahanty High School in Queens in 1960 . He then attended Florida State University in Tallahassee ( Florida ) between 1960 and 1961 . He then served in the United States Army Medical Corps between 1961 and 1964 . He then worked as a sales representative for a heavy machinery company between 1972 and 1976.

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He represented Suffolk County in the New York State Legislature between 1976 and 1979 . In the 1978 congressional election , Carney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Otis G. Pike on January 4, 1979 . He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he refused to run again in 1986 , he left the Congress after January 3, 1987 . He then worked as a private advocate . He lived in Washington DC
