Ebenezer Sage (born August 16, 1755 in Chatham (now Portland ), Colony of Connecticut , † January 20, 1834 in Sag Harbor , New York ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1809 and 1815 and between 1819 and 1820 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ebenezer Sage grew up during the British colonial era. Initially taught by a tutor , he graduated from Yale College in 1778 . Sage studied medicine and opened his first practice in East Hampton in 1784 . After moving to Sag Harbor in 1801, a second followed. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the 1808 congressional elections , Sage was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel Riker on March 4, 1809 . After two successful re-elections to the US House of Representatives, he decided not to run again and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1815 . During his time in the US House of Representatives, he kept busy correspondence with a number of friends and acquaintances. Many of his illustrative letters survive to this day and serve as a contemporary source for events in Washington DC and Long Island during the 1812 War . After the end of his tenure he resumed his work as a doctor. In the congressional election of 1818 Sage was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the first constituency of New York, where he succeeded George Townsend on March 4, 1819 . However, his election was successfully challenged by James Guyon junior on January 14, 1820 on the basis of an incorrect registration for election. He then resumed his work as a doctor. His last political appearance took place the following year as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly . Sage died on January 20, 1834 in Sag Harbor and was then buried in the Old Burying Ground . His body was later reburied in Oakland Cemetery .
