George Townsend
George Townsend (* 1769 in Lattingtown , Nassau County , New York Province, † August 17, 1844 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Townsend was born and raised in the township of Oyster Bay about six years before the outbreak of the War of Independence . With increasing age he went to agricultural activities. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the congressional election of 1814 Townsend was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where on March 4, 1815 he succeeded John Lefferts and Ebenezer Sagewho previously represented the first district in the US House of Representatives. Since he renounced a third candidacy in 1818, he left the Congress after March 3, 1819 . He died on August 17, 1844 in the city of his birth.
