Teunis Garret Bergen (born October 6, 1806 in Brooklyn , New York , † April 24, 1881 ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Teunis Garret Bergen was born and raised in Brooklyn about six years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended community schools and the Erasmus Hall Academy in Flatbush . He then worked in agriculture and worked as a surveyor . Between 1836 and 1859 he was Town Supervisor of New Utrecht in Kings County . He took part in the New York Constituent Assemblies in 1846, 1867, and 1868 , and the Democratic National Conventions in Baltimore and Charleston a year before the outbreak of the Civil War .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded Martin Kalbfleisch on March 4, 1865 . He then returned to agriculture and carried out surveying work at New Utrecht. In addition, he wrote literary and historical works.
