New Utrecht

New Utrecht was a city in what is now the New York borough of Brooklyn . It was named after the Dutch city ​​of Utrecht .

New Utrecht was founded in 1652 by Cornelius van Werckhoven . During the American Revolutionary War , the city was the British base of operations for the Battle of Long Island .

In 1894 New Utrecht was incorporated into Brooklyn, which in turn became part of New York City in 1898.

Today the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bensonhurst, Borough Park and Bay Ridge are located in the area of ​​the former New Utrecht .
