George Taylor (politician, 1820)

George Taylor (born October 19, 1820 in Wheeling , West Virginia , † January 18, 1894 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Taylor was born about five years after the end of the British-American War in Wheeling, which at the time was still part of Virginia . He enjoyed a good education. Then he studied medicine and law . After his admission to the bar, he began practicing in Indiana . In 1844 he moved to Alabama and in 1848 to Brooklyn , where he continued his practice as a lawyer. He held several local offices. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1856 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the second constituency of New York, where he succeeded James ST Stranahan on March 4, 1857 . He suffered for his re-election bid in 1858 , a defeat and withdrew from the after March 3, 1859 Congress of. He then resumed his practice as a lawyer in Washington DC and led it until his death on January 18, 1894. His body was then interred in Rock Creek Cemetery .
