Abraham Vanderveer

Abraham Vanderveer (born 1781 in Kings County , New York , † July 21, 1839 in Brooklyn , New York) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Vanderveer was born and raised in Kings County during the War of Independence . He attended community schools. Then he was between 1816 and 1821 and between 1822 and 1837 as a town clerk ( county clerk ) in Kings County. After the founding of Brooklyn Savings Bank , he was there for the treasurer ( treasurer elected). Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1836 , Vanderveer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel Barton on March 4, 1837 . Since he refused to run again in 1838 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1839 . He died in Brooklyn on July 21, 1839 and was buried in the Reformed Dutch Cemetery . The Mexican-American War broke out about seven years later .
