John Smith (born  February 12, 1752 in Mastic , Suffolk County , Province of New York , †  August 12, 1816 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who represented the state of New York in both chambers of Congress .

John Smith's political career began in 1784 when he was first elected to the New York State Assembly for Suffolk County . He stayed there until 1785; further terms in the lower house of the New York Legislature followed from 1787 to 1794 and from 1798 to 1800. In 1788 he took part in the assembly that ratified the United States Constitution for New York State .

After the death of MP Jonathan Nicoll Havens , John Smith was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives. He took his seat on February 27, 1800 and twice ran successfully for re-election. On February 23, 1804, he moved within Congress to the Senate ; previously he had won the by-election for a vacant mandate in this case too. This was preceded by the resignation of Senator DeWitt Clinton , whose place was initially occupied by John Armstrong . 1807 he was confirmed in office; after six more years in the Senate, he did not stand for re-election.

From 1813 to 1815 Smith served as the US Marshal for the New York District. He then served with the rank of major general in the New York State Militia until he died on August 12, 1816 in his hometown of Mastic.
