Edward Murphy Jr. (*  15. December 1836 in Troy , New York ; †  3. August 1911 in Elberon , New Jersey ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the State of New York in the US Senate represented.

After attending school in his home country, Edward Murphy continued his education at St. John's College in the Bronx , where he graduated in 1857. He then embarked on a career as a businessman in the brewing industry.

Murphy served on Troy City Council from 1864 to 1866; between 1875 and 1883 he held the office of mayor of this city. In 1892 he was finally elected for the Democrats in the US Senate in Washington , where he prevailed against the Republican incumbent Frank Hiscock . Six years later he was defeated by the Republican Chauncey Depew in his re-election attempt and had to resign from the Senate on March 3, 1899. During his tenure as a senator, he chaired the Committee on Relations with Canada .

As a result, Murphy went back to his business activities. He became President of Troy Gas Co. and Vice President of Manufacturers' National Bank in Troy.
