Henry Allen Foster (born May 7, 1800 in Hartford , Connecticut , †  May 11, 1889 in Rome , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician who represented the state of New York in both chambers of Congress .

Career

Henry Allen Foster was born in Hartford in the early 19th century. In his childhood the family moved to Cazenovia . He attended community schools there. Foster was studying law . He was admitted to the bar in 1822 and then began practicing in Oneida County . Guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Oneida County between 1827 and 1831 and from 1835 to 1839 . He also held the post of supervisor in the Town of Rome in 1829 and 1830 and in 1833 and 1834 . He sat in the New York Senate between 1831 and 1834 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1836 congressional elections for the 25th Congress , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Rutger B. Miller and Joel Turrill on March 4, 1837 , who had previously represented the district in the US House of Representatives together. He retired from the after March 3, 1839 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Rome. As a Democrat, he was appointed to the US Senate to fill the vacancy that had arisen from the resignation of Silas Wright . He exercised this mandate from November 30, 1844 to January 27, 1845, when a successor was elected. He was a judge on the New York Supreme Court for the fifth district between 1864 and 1872 . He then held the post as President of the Board of Trustees at Hamilton College . He was also Vice President of the American Colonization Society . He died on May 11, 1889 in Rome and was buried in the cemetery of the same name.
