Rome is a city in Oneida County (New York) with 32,725 inhabitants (as of 2010). Together with Utica and the surrounding area, the city forms the Utica – Rome metropolitan area in the northern center of the state of New York . Politically, it belongs to New York's 24th congressional district .
With an area of 190.0 km², the city is the second largest city by area in the state of New York. Rome is 139 meters above sea level.
history
The city's history dates back to 1758 when the British military began building Fort Stanwix . At the latest when the building was occupied in 1763, a settlement was built around it. In 1796 the place was first named Lynchville . In 1777 Oneida Indians and American patriots under Col. Peter Gansevoort fought against the British during the American Revolutionary War and held Fort Stanwix. The British were raised by Gen. Barry St. Leger commands.
