Virginia "Ginny" Thrasher (born February 28, 1997 in Rome , New York ) is an American marksman .

life and career

Virginia Thrasher was born in 1997 to the youngest child of Roger, a US Air Force member , and Valerie Thrasher, and grew up with two brothers. The 1.55 meter tall athlete lives in Springfield (Virginia) and studies engineering at West Virginia University after attending West Springfield High School . Thrasher trained in figure skating at a young age , before she started shooting in 2011 after a hunting trip with her grandfather; the right-handed shooter trains at the Arlington Optimist Acorns club .

In August 2015, she first took part in the World Cup in 10-meter air rifle shooting in Qəbələ, Azerbaijan , and finished in 27th place. In April and May 2016, the American took 28th and seventh place in the 10-meter air rifle shooting and tenth and fourth place in the 50-meter small-bore three-position competition at the World Cups in Rio de Janeiro and Munich . On August 6, 2016, Thrasher won the gold medal in air rifle shooting over 10 meters at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Chinese Du Li (2004 Olympic champion) and Yi Siling (2012 Olympic champion). This made her the first Olympic champion of the Summer Games.
