Qəbəl ə (also Qäbälä , pronunciation about Gäbälä ; Russian Габала / Gabala or Габеля / Gabelja , until 1991 Куткашен / Kutkaschen ) is a city in the rayon of the same name in Azerbaijan . It has a population of around 13,200 (2014).

It is located in the Greater Caucasus , 220 kilometers northwest of Baku , near the Qaraçay and Qoçalançay rivers . Not far from the city, Russia operated the Qəbələ radar station until 2012 .

economy

The city's economy is based on the production of canned vegetables , tobacco and the drying of silkworms - cocoons .

The town has a museum dedicated to the history of the region, housed in a former mosque, which exhibits archaeological finds, including Greek coins from the time of Alexander the Great . Around 20 kilometers from the city are the ruins of the historic city Çuxur Qəbələ from the 4th century BC, which were discovered in 1959. The city was the old capital of the ancient kingdom of Albania , before it had to be relocated to Partaw (then "Perozabad", Pers. Perozstadt) after the conquest of the Sassanid Empire, Peroz I. Even after that, ancient Gabala was still an episcopal city. The excavated fortifications probably date from the 5th – 6th centuries.
