Tom Sestito (born September 28, 1987 in Rome , New York ) is an Italian - American ice hockey player . The left winger has been under contract with the Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League since December 2018 . Before that, he played a total of 155 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets , Philadelphia Flyers , Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League . Mainly, however , the Enforcer was used in the American Hockey League. His brother Tim is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Sestito began his career with Plymouth Whalers from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he played in a team with his older brother Tim Sestito in the 2004/05 season . After two seasons in the OHL Tom Sestito was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the third round as a total of 85th player from the Columbus Blue Jackets . The offensive player then completed another season in the Ontario Hockey League, at the end of which he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Plymouth Whalers and thereby earned a participation in the 2007 Memorial Cup with his team . In this tournament, the Whalers were eliminated in the semifinals against the eventual Memorial Cup winner Vancouver Giants . Tom Sestito was the most successful points collector of the competition with seven scorer points in five games together with Milan Lucic and Michal Řepík .
Then Sestito switched to the organization of the Blue Jackets. In the following three and a half years, however, the left shooter only made 13 appearances for the franchise from the US state of Ohio . Most of the time Tom Sestito spent with the Columbus Blue Jackets farm teams in the American Hockey League (AHL), Syracuse Crunch and Springfield Falcons . On February 28, 2011, the Blue Jackets transferred him to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Greg Moore and Michael Chaput . Sestito played for the Adirondack Phantoms in the AHL for the rest of the season . In the 2011/12 season he was first used for the Flyers in the NHL. After 14 games for Philadelphia, he tore a muscle in his groin in February 2012, which meant that he had to suspend the game for the remainder of the regular season .
On March 1, 2013, Sestito , who was on the waiver list, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks . There he was an integral part of the NHL squad in the 2013/14 season and made 70 appearances. In the following season, however, the attacker received almost no more time with the Canucks and was instead given to the Utica Comets in the AHL. After he had not played a game there since the end of January 2015, although he was operational, the Canucks announced in late February that Sestito would no longer be active for either of the two teams. Sestito should continue to receive his salary until the end of the contract and then look for a new club.
He did this in August 2015 when he signed a professional tryout contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins until the start of the season. In the NHL squad, however, he was unable to establish himself, so he was committed in October 2015 by the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , the AHL farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins. There he was so convincing that the Pittsburgh Penguins signed him for a year in February 2016. This contract was subsequently extended for another year before he declared his active career to end in the summer of 2018. In December 2018 he returned to professional business in the Toronto Marlies jersey from the AHL.
