history
In 1994, the Springfield-based AHL team of the Springfield Indians (1926 to 1994) was sold to Worcester . However, the former Indians management achieved that an additional team should be installed in Springfield. Since the rights to the name of the Indians were granted, the new team was named after two falcons that nested in the city and were very well known there. Defender John Stevens scored the first goal .
Initially, the Falcons farm team of the Hartford Whalers and the Winnipeg Jets stayed , later they worked together with the Phoenix Coyotes and the Tampa Bay Lightning . From 2007 to 2010 they were the Edmonton Oilers' farm team . The Falcons farm team included the Johnstown Chiefs ( ECHL ). With the start of the 2010/11 season, the Falcons were the Columbus Blue Jackets farm team . In the 2015/16 season they cooperated with the Arizona Coyotes and the Rapid City Rush .
The Falcons were able to win a division title twice (1995/96 and 1997/98). However, they were eliminated early in all six play-offs .
With the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the NHL cooperated with the Arizona Coyotes , who also bought the Falcons franchise in April 2016. In May 2016 it was announced that the team would be relocating to Tucson , Arizona to operate as Tucson Roadrunners . The place of the Falcons in Springfield was taken by the Portland Pirates , who were also bought and relocated and are active as Springfield Thunderbirds from the beginning of the 2016/17 season .
Most famous former players of the Falcons were Daniel Brière , u. a. with the Colorado Avalanche , and Manny Legace , former goalkeeper a. a. the St. Louis Blues or Carolina Hurricanes .
