Emmanuel "Manny" Legace (born February 4, 1973 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has played for the Los Angeles Kings , Detroit Red Wings , St. Louis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League .

Career

Legace was drawn at 188th place by the Hartford Whalers in the eighth round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft . At that time he played with the Niagara Falls Thunder in the Ontario Hockey League . In the following years he continued to play in lower class leagues, including for the Springfield Falcons between 1994 and 1998. In 1994 he won the silver medal with the Canadian national team at the Winter Olympics , but was not used himself.

In 1997 the Hartford Whalers moved to Carolina and have been known as the Carolina Hurricanes since the beginning . In 1998 he was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings , where he was on the ice for the first time in the National Hockey League , but was between the posts for Long Beach Ice Dogs in the International Hockey League for most of the season . At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season Legace was a free agent and got a contract with the Detroit Red Wings , but was used in the season almost exclusively with the Manitoba Moose in the IHL.

In the following years he got more ice age in the NHL, but was still in the shadow of other goalies, such as Chris Osgood , Dominik Hašek or Curtis Joseph . In 2002 he won the Stanley Cup with Detroit . During the lockout in the NHL, he played in Russia for Chimik Voskressensk , but only played two games and spent the rest of the season in Novi , Michigan . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he was finally number 1 with the Detroit Red Wings and ended the regular season with his team in first place. The play-offs were very early and surprisingly in the first round against the Edmonton Oilers ended against which they lost 4-2 (Best of Seven).

Despite good performance, he was informed after the season that they were no longer planning with him and that the contract would not be extended. In early August he signed a contract with the St. Louis Blues . There he took over the post of goalkeeper and was still one of the stronger players of the team in the 2006/07 season , although the year was rather disappointing for the Blues. However, Legace could not complete the full number of games because he only suffered a concussion in December and had to undergo knee surgery in late February 2007. His contract was finally extended for two years to 2009. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season Legace lost his regular place in the gate to Chris Mason , who had been replaced by the Nashville Predators and played a very strong season. On February 6, 2009, the St. Louis Blues announced that they have put Manny Legace on the waiver list and have brought goalkeeper Chris Holt from the farm team to the NHL roster . After a season with the Carolina Hurricanes , where he played few games, he moved to the Iserlohn Roosters in 2010 .

After he completed a try-out at the Vancouver Canucks in the summer of 2011 , but had not received a contract, the goalkeeper was also committed to a try-out for the 2011/12 season by the San Antonio Rampage from the American Hockey League. After an AHL game for the Rampage, Legace decided in October 2011 for an engagement with the Springfield Falcons, again on a try-out basis. After the 2011/12 season Legace ended his active career.
