Christopher Mason (born April 20, 1976 in Red Deer , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Augsburger Panther in the German Ice Hockey League in the 2014/15 season .
Career
Chris Mason began his career in 1993 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Victoria Cougars , where he was used three times in his first season. The team moved to Prince George in 1994 and renamed themselves Prince George Cougars . Mason followed the team and prevailed as a regular goalkeeper, which led to his being selected in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round at position 122. Mason stayed in the WHL for another two years until he reached the age limit of 21.
The Devils hadn't signed him, but he got a contract with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in late June 1997 . But in the National Hockey League he was not used. Instead, he played in the American Hockey League for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , the farm team of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Shortly before the start of the 1998/99 season , Mason and defenseman Marc Moro were transferred for Dominic Roussel from Anaheim to the newly formed Nashville Predators . He spent most of the season with the Milwaukee Admirals farm team in the International Hockey League . For Nashville, he made his debut in the NHL, but he never played from the start, but was allowed in goal when the team was hopelessly behind. He played his first game against Anaheim when he played the last third with a score of 1-6, against the Philadelphia Flyers he was allowed on the ice halfway through the game, as it was 0-5, just like in the game against the Boston Bruins as he got 18 minutes of ice age.
The following year he played exclusively in the IHL. In the 2000/01 season he played for the Predators for the first time from the start, lost the game and conceded two goals. It was his only use in the NHL that season, otherwise he continued to play for Milwaukee, just as the year after when the Milwaukee Admirals first competed in the American Hockey League. In the summer of 2002, Mason's contract in Nashville expired and he was taken over by the Florida Panthers , who used him in the farm team, the San Antonio Rampage in the AHL.
His contract was renewed again in the summer of 2003, but was released by the team shortly afterwards. The Nashville Predators took him again under contract where Mason played a greater role immediately because he is the new back-up -Goalie of Tomáš Vokoun was. Mason played 17 games and convinced with an average of 2.18 goals against and a catch rate of 92.6 percent.
The 2004/05 NHL season fell out due to the lockout and Mason signed a contract with Vålerenga Ishockey in the Norwegian Ice Hockey League. With the team, he finished first in the regular season and also won the playoffs . Mason was voted the league's best goalkeeper.
In the 2005/06 season , Mason benefited from an injury to goalkeeper Vokoun at the end of the season. Mason got more ice age and played a total of 23 games, of which he won twelve and lost five. Because of the injury to Vokoun, Mason was also number 1 in the playoffs, but failed there because of the San Jose Sharks in the first round.
After recovering from Vokoun's injury, Mason took on the role of back-up goalie again in the 2006/07 season . After the Predators had transferred Vokoun to Florida , Mason should take the place of Vokoun in the 2007/08 season , but he could not assert himself against his substitute goalkeeper Dan Ellis and thus took the position of back-up goalie again since February 2008 . After the Predators' management agreed on a new contract with Ellis, they transferred Mason to the St. Louis Blues on the day of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft for a four-round suffrage .
In 2007 he won the ice hockey world championship with Team Canada , but he was not used. Two years later, Mason was second goalkeeper behind Dwayne Roloson and came to four missions during the tournament. With a catch rate of around 96.5 percent and an average of one goal conceded per game, he was statistically the best goalkeeper in the World Cup and won the silver medal with Canada.
In July 2010 he left the Blues and was hired as a free agent by the Atlanta Thrashers . The Canadian subsequently played regularly for both the Thrashers and, after their relocation for the 2011/12 season, for the Winnipeg Jets . In early July 2012, Mason returned to the Nashville Predators organization.
In the summer of 2013 he switched to the Italian Elite.A , where he signed with Ritten Sport and helped the team to the first championship title in club history through his consistently good performances. He also won the Coppa Italia with Ritten .
In May 2014 Mason was signed for one year by the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League . Then the Canadian ended his active career.

On April 15, 2006, a goal in the NHL was added. Again an opponent hit his own goal and Mason was named as a goalscorer.
- On November 13, 2005, Mason injured himself warming up for an NHL game. Substitute goalkeeper Brian Finley replaced him and defender Jamie Allison had to sit on the bench in goalkeeping gear as a substitute.
