Vokoun, who was awarded the Zlatá hokejka as Czech ice hockey player of the year in 2010, celebrated his greatest career successes in the jersey of the Czech national team by winning the world championship in 2005 and 2010 .

Career

Vokoun in the jersey of the Nashville Predators

He began his professional career in his home country with Poldi Kladno . There the NHL became aware of him and so the Canadiens de Montréal secured the rights to him in the NHL Entry Draft 1994 by pulling him in the ninth round as 226th.

In 1995 he moved to North America and first played for the Wheeling Thunderbirds in the East Coast Hockey League and in the American Hockey League for Montreal's farm team , the Fredericton Canadiens . He made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in the 1996/97 season . This game should remain the only one in the Canadians' jersey. After another year in Fredericton, the Canadiens gave him to the Nashville Predators .

There he was able to assert himself in the 1998/99 season as the second goalkeeper behind Mike Dunham , but had to pause the following season due to injury. He was the second man behind Dunham for three years before replacing Dunham as the first goalkeeper in the 2002/03 season .

Internationally he played at the Junior World Championships in 1996 and the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 and 2010 as well as at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 for the Czech national ice hockey team . In 2005 he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament and won the world championship with the Czech Republic. In 2010 he won another world championship with the Czechs.

In April 2006 it was announced that Vokoun suffered from thrombophlebitis in the pelvic area, which is why he was absent from the playoffs . In July it was announced that Vokoun could continue his career and in early September he signed a four-year deal with the Nashville Predators.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , Vokoun performed very well and was able to win eleven of its 16 games with a catch rate of 92 percent. But at the end of November he tore his thumb and fell out for a long time. He made his comeback and reached the playoffs with the Predators. On June 22, 2007 he was transferred from the Predators to the Florida Panthers . In exchange, the Predators received, among other things, a first-round draft pick for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft .

On July 2, 2011, Vokoun signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals . On June 3, 2012, Vokoun signed a two-year deal worth $ 4 million with the Pittsburgh Penguins after they had acquired Vokouns transfer rights in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from Washington Capitals. After his contract in Pittsburgh was not renewed after the 2013-14 season , Vokoun decided in December 2014 to end his playing career.
