A total of 211 players from 12 nations were drafted from the NHL franchises in seven rounds. Also available are those players who were elected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and who had not signed an entry contract with their original draft club by the time of the 2012 Entry Draft .
Draft order
The draft order was determined on April 10, 2012 after the end of the regular season of the 2011/12 NHL season by the draft lottery. The 14 teams that did not qualify for the play-offs of this season took part; or their right to vote holder. The winner of the lottery could move up a maximum of four positions in the sequence. The worst team in the regular season had a 48.2 percent chance of winning the lottery; the best of the 14 teams not qualified for the playoffs in 14th place had a chance of 0.5 percent.
The Edmonton Oilers won the lottery, moving up one place from second to first place in the draft order. As a result, they secured the first overall draft pick for the third time in a row . The Columbus Blue Jackets , the worst team of the regular season, slipped from first to second place in the draft order. The Oilers are the second team in NHL history to have the first right to vote for three years in a row. This privilege was previously only owned by the Québec Nordiques , which had the first overall pick in 1989 , 1990 and 1991 .
The draft order of the 16 play-off participants will be determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner is placed on position 30, the final opponent on position 29. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining play-off teams are seeded based on their standings in the regular season. The rule is that the team with the fewest table points is in 15th position. The draft order applies to all rounds of the Entry Draft; The teams can acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers as well as hand over their own to other teams.
