Michael Wallace "Mike" Matheson (born February 27, 1994 in Pointe-Claire , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League since April 2015 and plays in the position of defender . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .

Career

Matheson played during his junior years between 2009 and 2011 for the Lac St-Louis Lions in the lower junior classes of the province of Québec . For the 2011/12 season, the defender joined the Dubuque Fighting Saints from the United States Hockey League . He remained loyal to them for a year, was elected to the All-Star Team at the end of the season as the best-scoring defender in the league and in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 23rd place was selected by the Florida Panthers from the National Hockey League .

The defense attorney then enrolled at Boston College in the summer of 2012 to pursue a degree. In parallel, he therefore ran for the following three seasons for their ice hockey program in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time, Matheson was named to numerous all-star teams for the Hockey East and NCAA. Before his fourth and final year of college, which he subsequently failed to enter, the Canadian finally signed a contract with the Florida Panthers in April 2015. They used him for the rest of the 2014/15 season on their farm team , the San Antonio Rampage , in the American Hockey League . In the 2015/16 season Matheson was in the squad of the new AHL cooperation partner, the Portland Pirates . Due to injury problems in the Panthers' main squad, the defensive player finally celebrated his NHL debut in February 2016 and played in a total of three games by the end of the regular season . Further injuries to his teammates helped him to five more missions during the play-offs .

In October 2017, Matheson signed a new contract in Florida that - starting with the 2018/19 season - is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.875 million over the next eight years.

International

Matheson played in the junior division at both the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 . While he finished fourth in the ranks of the Canada Québec team at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, he won the gold medal with the all-Canadian team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

In the senior sector, Matheson took part in the 2016 World Cup with just the experience of eight NHL games , where he made his international breakthrough. At the end of the competition, the defender had collected six scorer points - including two goals - in ten tournament games and celebrated the world championship title. In addition, Matheson was voted the tournament's best defender and was named to the All-Star Team. The following year, Matheson won the silver medal with Team Canada at the 2017 World Cup .
