Michael "Mike" Hoffman (born November 24, 1989 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League since June 2018 . The left winger previously spent eight years in the Ottawa Senators organization .
Career
youth
Mike Hoffman played for the Kitchener Dutchmen in his hometown in his youth , but subsequently had great difficulties establishing himself in top-class Canadian junior ice hockey. Towards the end of the 2006/07 season he completed a total of six games for the Kitchener Rangers from the Ontario Hockey League , which, however, then deleted him from the team. As a result, Hoffman joined the Olympiques de Gatineau from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), which, however, also saw no future in him after 19 missions and he had to leave the team. Subsequently, the winger was committed by the Voltigeurs de Drummondville , who at that time ranked last in the LHJMQ and were trained by Guy Boucher . In Drummondville, the Canadian finally established himself at the highest junior level and had 36 scorer points from 42 games by the end of the 2007/08 season .
Hoffman's breakthrough came in the following 2008/09 season. With the team he won both the Trophée Jean Rougeau as the best team of the regular season and the Coupe du Président in the subsequent playoffs. He increased his personal statistics to 94 points from 62 regular season games and was also elected to the LHJMQ's First All-Star team . With these achievements, he was also interesting for the NHL Entry Draft , in which he had not played a role in 2008, although he was already available. In 2009 , the Ottawa Senators selected him in 130th position. However, Hoffman returned for the time being to the LHJMQ and spent the 2009/10 season with the Saint John Sea Dogs , where he was able to maintain his services. With the Sea Dogs he again reached the final of the Coupe du Président, but was defeated there by the Moncton Wildcats . The Canadian was awarded the Michel Brière trophy as the most valuable player and the Frank J. Selke trophy as the fairest player in the league, and was also elected to the LHJMQ Frst All-Star Team and the CHL Second All-Star Team . He also set a new season record for the Sea Dogs with 46 goals.
Ottawa Senators
After the 2009/10 season he signed an entry contract with the Ottawa Senators , who drafted him in 2009 . In order to give him match practice, he was initially given to the Binghamton Senators , the farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), and spent the entire season there (except for four games for the Elmira Jackals in the ECHL ). In his debut season in professional gaming, he won the Calder Cup directly with the Senators . Hoffman spent most of the following two seasons in Binghamton, but made his debut for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL) in December 2011 and had this use followed by three more in the 2012/13 season, in which, however, he played several games a broken collarbone . In the summer of 2013, the Senators extended his contract by one year and increasingly granted him more playing time in the NHL, so in 2013/14 he came to 25 games in which he contributed six scorer points. In the AHL he achieved an average of over one point per game for the first time (67 in 51 games), took part in the AHL All-Star Classic and was elected to the First All-Star Team .
After another contract extension in June 2014, the Canadian became an integral part of the NHL line-up, but was still considered a rookie because he had played 25 games in the previous season and thus exactly reached the specified limit, but did not exceed it. Therefore, he was allowed to participate as a rookie in the Skills Competition of the NHL All-Star Games and ended the season with 27 goals at the top of the rookie goalscorer list . He contributed a total of 48 scorer points, played almost all the regular season games and thus played a key role in ensuring that the Senators reached the playoffs.
In the summer of 2016, Hoffman signed a new four-year contract in Ottawa that should earn him an average annual salary of approximately $ 5.2 million. With the team he reached the conference final in the following playoffs in 2017 , but failed there because of the Pittsburgh Penguins . The subsequent 2017/18 season turned out to be sportingly disappointing, so that the Senators aimed for a personnel change and in June 2018, Hoffman together with Cody Donaghey and a five-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 to the San Jose Sharks . In return, Ottawa received Mikkel Bødker , Julius Bergman and a six-round vote in the same draft. The Sharks promptly sent Hoffman along with a seven-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft to the Florida Panthers , who transferred a second-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft as well as a fourth and a five-round vote in the 2018 draft to San Jose. In addition, a few days before the barter, it became known that the wife of Senator Captain Erik Karlsson had taken legal action against Hoffman's fiancée and applied for a peace bond (comparable to an injunction ). Hoffman's fiancée is said to have wished Karlsson's wife and their unborn child death in numerous comments on social networks ( cyber bullying ) . Hoffman and his fiancée denied the allegations, however, due to these internal team tensions, an imminent transfer was considered very likely by the media.
