MacKenzie Weegar (born January 7, 1994 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Florida Panthers from the National Hockey League since May 2014 and plays for them on the position of defender .
Career
MacKenzie Weegar played in his youth, among other things, for the Winchester Hawks and the Nepean Raiders in lower-class junior leagues in his home province of Ontario, without being considered by teams of the Ontario Hockey League . As a result, he joined the Halifax Mooseheads from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) in the summer of 2012 , in order to still be able to be active at the highest junior level from now on. As a rookie , the defender had 44 scorer points in the LHJMQ as well as the league-wide best plus / minus statistic of +55, so that he was elected to the LHJMQ All-Rookie Team . Meanwhile, he won the playoffs for the Coupe du Président with the Mooseheads and a little later the prestigious Memorial Cup before he was selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 206th position by the Florida Panthers . For now, however, the Canadian returned to Halifax for another year, in which he increased his personal statistics again and was appointed to the LHJMQ Second All-Star Team .
Weegar then signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers in May 2014 . These put the defender in the 2014/15 season for the time being with their farm teams , the San Antonio Rampage from the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Cincinnati Cyclones from the third-rate ECHL . As a result, he increased his performance from year to year, while the Panthers changed their AHL farm team, so that he ran in 2015/16 for the Portland Pirates and 2016/17 for the Springfield Thunderbirds . Weegar finally made his Florida National Hockey League (NHL) debut in April 2017, before extending his contract with the Panthers for a year in August 2017. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, the Canadian established himself in the Florida NHL squad and has been there regularly since then.
