Aleksander Aleksandrovich "Sasha" Barkov ( Russian Александр Александрович Барков ; German transcription: Alexander Alexandrowitsch Barkow ; born September 2, 1995 in Tampere ) is a Russian - Finnish ice hockey player who joined the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League in September 2013 Centers plays. With the Finnish national team , he won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics and a silver medal at the 2016 World Cup . His father Alexander Barkow was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Barkov was born and raised in Tampere, Finland , as his father Alexander worked for Tappara Tampere between 1994 and the end of his career in 2004 . During this time, Aleksander Barkov learned to play ice hockey in the club's junior division.
As a 15-year-old, he was in the squad for the club's U20 team and contributed 17 points in 25 games . On October 1, 2011, Barkov made his debut in the SM-liiga at the age of 16 . By preparing a goal he became the youngest player of all time to score a point in the top Finnish league. For the 2012/13 season , Barkov was finally firmly in the squad and was the second best scorer of his team with 48 points from 53 games. In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected second in the first round by the Florida Panthers .
For the 2013/14 NHL season , Barkov moved to North America and immediately received a place in the Panthers' squad. He also scored his first goal on his NHL debut on October 3, 2013 against the Dallas Stars . At the age of 18 years and 31 days, Barkov was the youngest NHL goalscorer since the 1943/44 season .
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Barkov took over the position of assistant captain with the Panthers , before he achieved by far his best personal statistic with 78 scorer points and led his team in this category. He then took over the captaincy from Derek MacKenzie in September 2018 . In the following season, the attacker increased his points yield again significantly to 96 points, which he placed among the top ten scorers in the league. In addition, he set a new franchise record that Pawel Bure previously held (94 points; 1999/00 season). In addition, he was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for his athletic fairness .
International
Barkov played in all of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation's junior teams between 2009 and 2012 . He was nominated for an international tournament for the first time at the U20 Junior World Cup in Canada in 2012 and, at the age of 16, was by far the youngest player in the Finnish squad. In the same year he completed the U18 Junior World Championship , in which he finished fourth with the U18 selection from his home country. He won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team at the 2014 Olympic Games and the silver medal at the 2016 World Cup . He was also part of the Finnish squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
