The right winger made over 700 appearances for the Detroit Red Wings , Calgary Flames , Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League . Most of this time he spent with the Red Wings, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2008 playoffs . In addition, he was honored with the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2015 for his athletic fairness.

Career

Jiří Hudler began his career in 1997 in the HC Vsetín U18 team in the Czech Republic. In his second season he was able to score 114 points in 46 games, so that after the season at the age of 15 he was already included in the U20 squad of Vsetín. In the 1999/2000 season he was also able to convince the U20 juniors and was even allowed to go on the ice twice for the professionals in the Extraliga .

The stakes for the U20 team were less in the 2000/01 season, but more and more for the professionals. That year he played for Vsetín and for HC Havířov Panthers in the extra league . In 2001/02 he finally made the breakthrough with the professionals of Vsetín and was able to score 46 points in 46 games. He also won the bronze medal with the Czech national team at the U18 Junior World Championships.

In North America, too, attention was drawn to his good performance and so Hudler was one of the players who were available for selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft . Hudler was selected in the second round at position 58 by the Detroit Red Wings .

He then completed the 2002/03 season at his home club HC Vsetín and in Russia at Ak Bars Kazan . Hudler was also used in the 2003 World Cup for the Czech Republic, where they just missed a medal.

In the summer of 2003 he moved to North America, where he played the 2003/04 season mainly with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, in the American Hockey League . But he was also allowed to gain first NHL experience when he was used in twelve games and even scored a goal.

Since the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled because of the lockout , Hudler first returned to his hometown club HC Vsetín, but then played most of the season in the AHL at Grand Rapids. In 2005/06 Hudler only played four times in the NHL, but was the third best scorer in the AHL with 96 points (36 goals, 60 assists) in 76 games.

Jiří Hudler with the Stanley Cup

The Red Wings extended his contract for a year in the summer of 2006 and added him to the NHL squad. Hudler was mainly used in the third or fourth row of attacks and scored 15 goals and ten assists. Towards the end of the season and in the playoffs, he was temporarily removed from the squad, as more experienced attackers had been committed with Kyle Calder and Todd Bertuzzi .

In July 2007, his contract was extended by two years and Hudler returned as a regular in the Red Wings squad, where he played a convincing season with 13 goals and 29 assists. In the playoffs he was only used in the fourth row of attacks, but he was able to prove his skills as a scorer. In the 22 playoff games he scored five goals and prepared nine goals, making him the team's fifth best scorer. He scored his most important goal in the final series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth game, when he contributed the decisive goal to 2-1 and thereby laid the foundation stone for Detroit to win the Stanley Cup .

After his contract expired in the summer of 2009, Hudler became a restricted free agent . Since he was not satisfied with the contract offer from Red Wings, the NHL arbitration board was turned on. A few days later, Hudler signed a contract with HK Dynamo Moscow . Then called USA Hockey and the National Hockey League Players' Association , the International Ice Hockey Federation to IIHF to investigate this transfer. In mid-September 2009 this decided that the transfer is legally valid, as Hudler did not have an active NHL contract at the time of signing in Moscow. After a year in the Continental Hockey League and the re-establishment of the OHK Dynamo , Hudler returned to the Red Wings. On May 24, 2010, he signed a $ 5.75 million two-year contract in Detroit. After his contract expired, he moved to the Calgary Flames in July 2012 . Due to the NHL lockout, Hudler completed four games for HC Lev Prague in the Continental Hockey League in September 2012 . In 2015 he also received the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy , while with 76 scorer points from 78 games he also achieved the best statistics of his NHL career.

After almost four years in Calgary, Hudler was handed over to the Florida Panthers in February 2016 , with the Flames receiving a second-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . Since his contract expired at the end of the season and the Panthers did not renew it, he joined the Dallas Stars in August 2016 for the following season . After this season, however, the Czech did not receive a further contract in Dallas, so he subsequently ended his active career. He had played a total of 791 NHl games and scored 470 points.
