Career
Ratelle played with the Guelph Biltmores in the Ontario Hockey Association during his junior years . After a brief but successful assignment with the Trois-Rivières Lions in the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL), he went back to Guelph, where the team had now been renamed Royals. Here he was the OHA's best assists with 61 assists. In this 1960/61 season he was also allowed to hunt for points three times for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League and was able to achieve two goals.
The 1961/62 season he played half with the Rangers without standing out there and the rest of the season in the EPHL with the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers . A back injury threw him back and so he was alternating between the Rangers and the Baltimore Clippers in the American Hockey League for the next three years . It was only during the 1964/65 season that he made his final breakthrough in the NHL. In the 1967/68 season he managed for the first time to achieve over 30 goals in one season. He played together with Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield in the GAG (Goal-A-Game) line . He played his most successful season in 1971/72 . With 109 points, he set a best performance for the Rangers which Jaromír Jágr could only surpass 34 years later in the 2005/06 season . The three players from the GAG Line occupied places 3 to 5 in the scorer list this season. However, a broken ankle in March prevented him from becoming the top scorer. Even in the playoffs he was not free from injuries and so the Rangers failed in the finals of the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins around Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito .
His performance with the Canadian team at the 1972 Summit Series was also very strong . After some good seasons with the Rangers, it became one of the biggest swap deals of the time. Together with Brad Park he moved to the Boston Bruins, in return Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais came to New York.
In Boston, too, where he often played in a storm series with Rick Middleton , he was always able to score over 70 points in his first five years. In the seasons 1976/77 and 1977/78 he reached the final games of the Stanley Cup twice with the Bruins, but both times they failed to the Canadiens de Montréal and so it was denied him to win this trophy. As the twelfth player in NHL history, he reached the 1,000 point mark on April 3, 1977 . After the 1980/81 season he ended his career.
From 1982 he was under Gerry Cheevers for three years assistant coach with the Bruins.
In 1985 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . In February 2018 him the New York Rangers honored by his jersey number 19 detained .
