Gerald Michael "Gerry" Cheevers (born December 7, 1940 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was active between 1961 and 1980 in the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association .
Career
Cheever's professional ice hockey career began in 1956 at the age of 16 with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors in the Ontario Hockey Association . The Toronto Maple Leafs owned the rights to the talented youngster before he was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1965 . He played on various farm teams for six years until he became the goalkeeper of the Bruins in 1967 . In 1970 and 1972 he won the Stanley Cup with Boston , and in the 1971/72 season he set a new record with 33 unbeaten games in a row.
Gerry Cheever's trademark became his unusual, stitched face mask, which he wore at every game since a face hit in training. The mask was created when his trainer Harry Sinden caught him in the cabin with a beer and a cigarette after this incident. Sinden ordered the uninjured Cheevers to go back on the ice, team coach John Forestall then painted a scar on the mask for fun. Every time Cheevers was hit similarly, a new seam was added, quickly making the mask the most famous in the NHL.
In the fall of 1972, Gerry Cheevers moved to the World Hockey Association , where he was three and a half seasons for the Cleveland Crusaders on the ice and was selected several times in one of the two All-Star teams.
In 1976 , the goalie returned to the Bruins due to financial disagreements with Cleveland, for whom he was on the ice until the end of his career after the 1979/80 season. After his active career, he acted as coach of the Boston Bruins for four and a half years, until 2006 he was active as a scout for the team.
In his NHL career, Gerry Cheevers only conceded 2.89 goals per game, in a total of 419 NHL appearances he was the winner 230 times and reached 26 shutouts . He also occupies second place in the eternal WHA statistics with the lowest rate of goals conceded and the most shutouts, even though he only completed half of all WHA seasons.
International
Gerry Cheevers played several games for the Canadian national ice hockey team , including the 1974 Summit Series and the 1976 Challenge Cup . He also competed with the NHL All Star Team at the 1979 Challenge Cup against the Soviet selection .
