Joseph James Terrence "Terry" O'Reilly (born June 7, 1951 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) and coach who played for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1985 .

Career

During his junior years he played for the Oshawa Generals in the OHA . Even here he was a noticeable player because of the combination of physical toughness and scoring qualities. So it came as no surprise that the Boston Bruins selected him 14th in the first round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft .

At that time, the Bruins around Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito were very strong, so that he was only used in one game of the Bruins for the 1971/72 season . He played the rest of the season for the AHL - farm team , the Boston Braves . So he was not in the squad when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup .

From the 1972/73 season he was an integral part of the NHL squad. Due to his physical style and enormous commitment, he was soon a crowd favorite in Boston. Mostly he played in a row with center Peter McNab . He increased in all areas over the years. After initially around 30 points and 100 penalty minutes, he soon reached 50 points and 150 penalty minutes. In the 1977/78 season he was with 90 points among the ten best scorers in the league, at the same time he was in the penalty box for the first time for over 200 minutes.

Until the early 1980s, he held the level of penalties, but fell back on the points. The 1982/83 season was not very enjoyable for him . A prolonged finger injury was followed by a protracted knee injury. At the end of April there was an argument with referee Andy van Hellemond , which earned him a ten-game suspension. In his final years he was the team captain of the Bruins because of his ability to carry the team away . In the summer of 1985 he ended his active career.

Soon he was an assistant coach behind the gang of Bruins and after Butch Goring was fired , he was made head coach in 1986. After leading the team to the finals in its second season, he could not repeat this success in the third year and made his job available. From 2002 he was assistant coach for the New York Rangers for two years .

On October 24, 2002 he was honored by the Bruins. Since then, the jersey with the number 24 has not officially been awarded by the Bruins.
