Michael Barry "Mike" Sullivan (born February 27, 1968 in Marshfield , Plymouth County , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach who played 743 games for the San Jose between 1986 and 2002 Sharks , Calgary Flames , Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. Sullivan has been the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins since December 2015 , which he led to winning the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017 .
Career
Player career
Sullivan initially played four years from 1986 to 1990 at Boston University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time he participated with the U20 national team of the United States at the Junior World Cup in 1988 . After he had already been selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft in 1987 in 69th position by the New York Rangers , he switched to the professional camp for the 1990/91 season. The transfer rights to his person had since been given by the Rangers to the Minnesota North Stars .
So who spent Center the playing time at first completely in the International Hockey League with the San Diego Gulls , before the 1991/92 season as a free agent to the newly established San Jose Sharks . There Sullivan made the leap into the regular roster and stayed in Northern California until the 1993/94 season until the Sharks put him on the waiver list, from where the Calgary Flames selected him. After another three and a half years in Calgary, where he had his best year in 1995/96 with 21 points, the Flames transferred him to the Boston Bruins in June 1997 as part of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft . Near his hometown he only played a year, as he remained unprotected in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft of Boston and was selected by the Nashville Predators . Nashville transferred the American to the Phoenix Coyotes . With the Coyotes Sullivan was four seasons in the squad and ended on July 29, 2002, his active career.

Immediately afterwards he took over as head coach of the Providence Bruins , the farm team of the Boston Bruins from the American Hockey League . Due to his excellent performance with Providence, he was promoted to assistant coach of the Boston Bruins during the 2002/03 season after Robbie Ftorek and his coaching staff had been dismissed there. For the 2003/04 season he was appointed head coach and Sullivan managed the best season record since 1992/93 with the Bruins . After the lockout year 2004/05 one went with him into the season 2005/06 , before he was dismissed by the new general manager Peter Chiarelli on June 27, 2006 after a weak year and missing the playoffs . After a one year hiatus, he was hired on May 31, 2007 by the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach. For the 2009/10 season , Sullivan took over the same position with the New York Rangers and filled it by the end of the 2012/13 season. He then worked as an assistant coach at the Vancouver Canucks , but was released after a season in May 2014 together with head coach John Tortorella .
After the 2014/15 season he succeeded John Hynes as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . In December 2015 Mike Johnston was released from the Pittsburgh Penguins , so that Sullivan "rose" from their farm team and took over the NHL franchise. At the end of the 2015/16 season he won the Stanley Cup directly with the Penguins and repeated this success the following year. In September 2016 he was the assistant coach of the US team at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 behind the gang, but retired with the team in the group stage.
