Jon Cooper (born August 23, 1967 in Prince George , British Columbia ) is a Canadian - American ice hockey coach who has coached the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League since March 2013 .

Career

After Cooper played ice hockey in the amateur field in school and university leagues for several years, his coaching career also started as coach of the school team at Lansing Catholic High School in the 1998/99 season. In the following years he continued to work in various junior / amateur leagues before he coached the Texarkana Bandits from the North American Hockey League from the 2003/04 season and also acted as general manager there . After three seasons, the Canadian moved within the league to the St. Louis Bandits , where he again occupied both the coach and managerial posts. In the same function, Cooper was active between 2008 and 2010 with the Green Bay Gamblers from the United States Hockey League , where he won the championship in the 2009/10 season and was then named Trainer and Manager of the Year.

In the summer of 2010, the organization of the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League took him under contract, where he first coached their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Norfolk Admirals , for two seasons from the 2010/11 season . After the Lightning changed their farm team, Cooper was first head coach of the Syracuse Crunch for the 2012/13 season , before he succeeded the dismissed Guy Boucher in the Lightning in the NHL in March 2013 and has been there ever since.

In the 2014/15 season he reached the Stanley Cup final with the Lightning, but lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks .

In September 2016, he was the assistant coach of Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA. At the 2017 World Cup , he led the Canadian national team to the silver medal as head coach.

In the 2018/19 season he led the Lightning with 62 wins and 128 points as the best team for over 20 years to the Presidents' Trophy , but surprisingly failed with the team in the first playoff round 4-0 at the Columbus Blue Jackets .

Others

Prior to his coaching career, Cooper played in addition to hockey, lacrosse and served as a public defender, having previously graduated from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School with a law degree. He is the son of a Canadian and an American , which means that he is citizens of both countries. He is also married and has two children.
