Mathieu Joseph (born February 9, 1997 in Laval , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since December 2016 and plays for them on the position of winger .

Career

Mathieu Joseph attended the Collège Antoine-Girouard in Saint-Hyacinthe in his youth and played for the school's ice hockey team in a regional youth league . In the middle of the 2013/14 season he moved to the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), the highest-ranking junior division in his home province. In the following year 2014/15, the winger developed into a regular scorer for the Sea Dogs, recording 21 goals and assists in 59 games before he was selected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 120th position by the Tampa Bay Lightning . For the time being, however, he returned to the LHJMQ, where he significantly increased his personal statistics and recorded 73 and 80 scorer points in the two following seasons , so that he was elected to the LHJMQ Second All-Star Team in 2016/17 . In addition, the Canadian and his team won the LHJMQ playoffs for the Coupe du Président in 2017 , leading the entire league in points in the post-season (32).

After Joseph had already signed an entry-level contract with the Lightning in December 2016 , he switched permanently to their organization for the 2017/18 season. Initially, the attacker was used by the Lightning farm team , the Syracuse Crunch , in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he recorded 53 points in his first professional season, making him the team's best scorer. In the subsequent preparation for the 2018/19 season, he finally earned a place in Tampa's squad and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2018 .

International

Joseph played his first international tournament with the Canadian U20 national team at the 2017 U20 World Cup in his own country. The Canadian team lost to Team USA in the final and thus won the silver medal. Joseph made his international debut in the jersey of the senior national team at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , where he won the silver medal with the team.
