Anthony Cirelli (born July 15, 1997 in Etobicoke , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League since May 2016 .
Career
Anthony Cirelli played in his youth for the Mississauga Reps and the Mississauga Chargers in Mississauga , before he moved to the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the 2014/15 season. In his first season he won the OHL playoffs for the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Generals and thus qualified for the prestigious Memorial Cup , in the final of which he helped Oshawa to a 2-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets with two goals . The attacker was then selected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 72nd position by the Tampa Bay Lightning . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the Canadian took over the captaincy of the Generals and increased his personal statistics significantly to 59 scorer points from 62 games, before he tried three games at the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League after the end of the OHL season (AHL) was used. The Crunch act as the Tampa Bay Lighting farm team , with which the center finally signed an entry-level contract a few weeks later .
Nevertheless, Cirelli initially returned to Oshawa, from where he was handed over to the Erie Otters in the middle of the 2016/17 season , who in return transferred Allan McShane and five draft voting rights to the Generals. With the Otters, the Canadian then won his second J. Ross Robertson Cup and led the entire OHL in playoff goals (15). In the following Memorial Cup, however, the team lost to the Windsor Spitfires 3: 4 in the final , while Cirelli was awarded the George Parsons Trophy as the fairest player of the tournament.
With the start of the 2017/18 season, the attacker switched permanently to the organization of the Tampa Bay Lightning and was initially still deployed in Syracuse before making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 2018 . After 39 points in the 2018/19 season, he was included in the NHL All-Rookie Team .
International
At the international level, Cirelli took part in the U20 World Cup 2017 in his own country with the Canadian U20 selection . The center was one of the best scorers on his team with seven points, but lost to the United States in the final after Shootout and thus won the silver medal.
Cirelli made his international debut in the jersey of the senior national team at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , where he won the silver medal with the team.
