Victor Erik Olof Hedman (born December 18, 1990 in Örnsköldsvik ) is a Swedish ice hockey player . The defender has been playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since 2009 , which he selected in second position in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft . He is considered one of the best defensive players in the league, so he was honored with the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2018 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
Career
MODO
Victor Hedman began his career in 2005 in the MODO Hockey U18 youth team . After he had already scored three goals and three assists in eight games , he was appointed to the U20 juniors at the age of just 14, where he played another ten games. In the following 2006/07 season he initially played again for the U18 team, but established himself as a regular in the older age group over the course of the season. With 25 points in 34 games, he was one of the best scorers among defenders and led all players in his position with 13 goals.
In the 2007/08 season he played only a few games in the juniors and made his debut as a 16-year-old in the professional team of MoDo Hockey in the Elitserien . Hedman spent almost the entire season with the seniors, prevailed as a regular player and played 39 games. During the 2008/09 season he developed into an important pillar in the MODO team and played mainly in the first defense lineup. Although his team missed the playoffs , he had the second best plus / minus statistics in the league and increased his points yield with seven hits and 14 templates.
In a poll by the Canadian sports broadcaster TSN among ten scouts from the North American ice hockey league National Hockey League , Hedman was voted the most promising talent for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft . During the season he was in other rankings behind the Canadian John Tavares . A good four weeks before the NHL Entry Draft, the Continental Hockey League (KHL) , founded in the summer of 2008, held its first ever junior draft . Here, too, Hedman, alongside Tavares, was one of the most highly rated talents in the rankings. However, the Swede was selected in the fourth and final round in 83rd place by HK Spartak Moscow , as the prospects of a commitment in the KHL seemed quite slim . A few weeks later, the Tampa Bay Lightning selected him in the NHL Entry Draft in second place behind Tavares. In July 2009, Hedman signed a standard rookie contract with the Florida franchise for a term of three years.
Tampa Bay Lightning
With the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Hedman ran from then on for the Lightning in the National Hockey League (NHL) and established himself there as an offensive defender. After he had spent the lockout of the 2012/13 season at Barys Astana in the KHL, he reached the final of the Stanley Cup with Tampa in the 2015 playoffs , but lost to the Chicago Blackhawks . He then signed a new eight-year contract in Florida in the summer of 2016, which should bring him a total salary of 63 million US dollars. In the following season 2016/17 he increased his offensive statistics again significantly to 72 scorer points from 79 games and thus set a new franchise record for defenders. At the end of the 2017/18 season, he was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the NHL and was also elected to the NHL First All-Star Team .
Victor Hedman is considered a talented defender who has good technical skills and can set accents on the offensive with a precise passing game and a precise shot. In addition, his stature of 1.98 meters gives him advantages in physical play. According to his own statements, he still has to work on his defensive game and bring more consistent performance.
International
Victor Hedman played for the Swedish national team for the first time at the 2007 U18 World Junior Championship . Sweden won the bronze medal after beating Canada 8-3 . His next international appearance was at the U20 World Cup in 2008 , where the Swedish team made it to the final undefeated and only lost to the Canadian team after it was extended . In the same year he also competed in the title fights for the U18 juniors . In four games Hedman was able to collect a total of four scorer points, his team finished fourth and could not win a medal this time. In 2009 Hedman played again at the U20 World Cup , where, as in the previous year, he and his national team only lost to the Canadians in the final.
Hedman played a total of 22 games for the Swedish national youth teams, scored two goals and prepared eight goals. At three world championships he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament.
With the senior national team of his home country, he took part in the 2010 World Cup, where the team also won the bronze medal. This was followed by sixth place at the 2012 World Cup and third place at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey . At the 2017 World Cup , Hedman finally won the gold medal with the Tre Kronor .
