Örnsköldsvik [ œɳʃœldsˈviːk ] is a town in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län and the historic province of Ångermanland .
It is located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia between Härnösand and Umeå and is the capital of the municipality of the same name . Occasionally the city is also called Ö-vik for short .
history
Örnsköldsvik was founded in 1842. The town of Örnsköldsvik was planned and built from 1885 as the economic center of Ångermanland , as the provincial government at that time considered it advantageous to have an important trading post on the coast. In 1893 the previous minority town ( köping ) was elevated to a town.
The town is named after the former Landshövding Per Abraham Örnsköld , who introduced advanced farming methods and the cultivation of potatoes in Ångermanland between 1762 and 1769 . It is one of the few cities in Sweden that was named after a non-royal person. The name ending - vik refers to the nearby mouth of the Moälven river into the bay at Örnsköldsvik.
In 1976 the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Örnsköldsvik , in 2008 the European Curling Championship and in 2014 the fourth preliminary round of the 2014 Melodifestivalen .
economy
Örnsköldsvik is an industrial city. In addition to wood processing and the paper industry, mechanical engineering is the largest employer in the region. One of the best known is the armaments company BAE Systems Hägglunds . The company Fjällräven , a manufacturer of outdoor equipment and functional clothing , has its headquarters here.

The Vändåtberget nature reserve is located 50 kilometers northwest of the city . 40 kilometers south of the city on the E4 is the National Park Skuleskogen . Furthermore, the well-known 128 km long High Coast Trail along the Höga Kusten ends on its last stage in Örnsköldsvik, the start is in Hornöberget.

The most important traffic connection is the European route 4 . There is also a railway line from Umeå via Örnsköldsvik to Sundsvall ( Botniabanan ), opened in 2010 , and a railway line to Mellansel . There is also an airport in Gideå about 25 km to the north .

The most popular sport in the city is ice hockey . MODO Hockey has been playing in the second class HockeyAllsvenskan since 2016 , after MODO had been top notch for many years and won the Swedish championship in 1979 and 2007. MODO plays its home games at the Fjällräven Center .
The footballers from Friska Viljor FC played for one year in the Superettan , the second highest league in Sweden , in the 2004 season . Currently you are in the fourth class Div. II Norrland on the ball. In Örnsköldsvik there is a ski jumping hill called Paradiskullen, on which national and international competitions are jumped every year.
