history

Örnsköldsvik was founded in 1842. The town of Örnsköldsvik was planned and built from 1885 as the economic center of Ångermanland , as the provincial government at that time considered it advantageous to have an important trading post on the coast. In 1893 the previous minority town ( köping ) was elevated to a town.

The town is named after the former Landshövding Per Abraham Örnsköld , who introduced advanced farming methods and the cultivation of potatoes in Ångermanland between 1762 and 1769 . It is one of the few cities in Sweden that was named after a non-royal person. The name ending - vik refers to the nearby mouth of the Moälven river into the bay at Örnsköldsvik.

In 1976 the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Örnsköldsvik , in 2008 the European Curling Championship and in 2014 the fourth preliminary round of the 2014 Melodifestivalen .
