Äänekoski [ ˈæːnɛkkɔski ] is a Finnish city with 18,851 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located 40 km north of Jyväskylä in the countryside of Central Finland .

Äänekoski parish was founded in 1911. In 1932 this municipality was divided into the market towns of Äänekoski and Suolahti and the rural municipality of Äänekoski. The rural community was incorporated again in 1969 Äänekoski, 1973 the market town was raised to town. In 1993, Konginkangas were incorporated , and in 2007 Äänekoski merged with the neighboring communities of Suolahti and Sumiainen .

Äänekoski's sights include the church from 1973 and the town hall built in 1986. Äänekoski is known in Finland for its basketball team Äänekosken Huima . The city is also the home of the 1993 javelin world champion, Kimmo Kinnunen .

politics

The strongest party in Äänekoski is the Social Democrats with 13 out of 43 seats on the city council, the highest decision-making body on local affairs, followed by the Center Party with nine seats. The third major party in Finland, the National Assembly Party , has four MPs. The third largest group, however, is the left-wing alliance with eight seats. The Christian Democrats , the Green Federation and the right-wing populist grassroots are also represented in the city council with three seats each . Ari Ranta-Aho has been the municipal director of Muurame since 2004.
