history

In the area of Muurame there was no settled settlement for a long time, but the wilderness was used by the Hämeers as a hunting ground. The first farmsteads in Muurame were not built until the 15th century. New settlers immigrated from the Savo region in the 16th century . The village of Muurame was part of the Jämsä parish at that time .

When the administration of the political parishes was separated from the church administration in 1865, Muurame became part of the Korpilahti parish . From this it split off as an independent community in 1921. In 1924, the municipality of Säynätsalo , located on an island in Lake Päijänne, split off from Muurame . After the latter had gained additional areas in several phases , it was annexed in 1994 as an exclave of the city of Jyväskylä , with which it had no common land border at the time.

The municipality's economy experienced a sharp boom after the economic crisis of the 1990s. The unemployment rate, which was 13.2 percent in 2000, was only 8 percent in 2006. In summer, numerous families spend their holidays in their own or rented Mökkis on the lake shore, in winter the main attraction is the Riihivuori ski center. This "idiot hill" is equipped with 5 ski lifts and allows downhill runs on 8 slopes with a height difference of up to 120 meters.

Architectural monuments

The church of Muurame

The parish church of Muurame, completed in 1929 according to plans by Alvar Aalto , is of architectural interest . It is Aalto's first church building and combines neoclassical and functionalist style features. The influence of the Renaissance basilicas in Italy, which Aalto visited on his honeymoon in 1924, is particularly noticeable. The floor plan of the single-nave long church, but especially the entrance portal on the west side in its design as a stylized triumphal arch of Alberti Sant'Andrea in Mantua . The entrance of the small south porch is designed as a loggia , the slightly offset bell tower on the east side is designed as a campanile . In the interior, the Italian theme is taken up in the fresco in the apse ; the work of the painter William Lönnberg ( Peter and Johannes heal the paralyzed man in front of the beautiful door of the Temple of Jerusalem ) is in the style of Florentine masters. The strictly designed interior was fundamentally redesigned in 1979, so that Aalto's work can no longer be viewed here in its original state.

Another attraction is the "Saunadorf", an open-air museum with 30 historical saunas from different parts of Finland. The hospital in Kinkomaa near Muurame was completed in 1930 as a tuberculosis sanatorium; today the functionalist hospital complex is a listed building.
