Wechi

Wechi (Russian: Вехи , translated road sign ) was an anthology (published in 1909, 5 editions) with articles by some well-known Russian authors. The anthology described the change of attitude of several Russian thinkers who had developed during the revolution of 1905 from their earlier pro-revolutionary, Marxist stance to liberalism or conservatism. The authors of the collection were Nikolai Berdjajew , Sergej Bulgakow , AS Izgojew, MO Herschenson (Geršenzon), BA Kistjakowskij, SL Frank , Pjotr Struwe . Four out of seven contributors were Neo-Kantians . These intellectuals rejected the violence of the revolution, anarchy and "ethical confusion", accused the radical parties and the Russian intelligentsia of dogmatism , nihilism, self-censorship and power cult. The contributors urged the Intelligencija to cultivate inner goodness and spiritual values.

The Wechi were heavily criticized both by the left (e.g. Lenin) and (in general) by intellectuals, and their attitude was sometimes even described as treason. The publication of the collection was later described as the greatest sensation in Russian intellectual life since Chaadayev's letter.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn saw the collection as a prophetic work, but it was ignored or rejected. (А.Солженицын, "Образованищина" in: "Из-под глыб" , М., 1974.)
