Jukka Rauhala

Jukka Matti Rauhala (born March 1, 1959 in Muurame ) is a former Finnish wrestler and winner of the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in free style in the lightweight.

Career

Jukka Rauhala was born in Muurame in 1959 as the son of the winner of the silver medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games in wrestling of the Greco-Roman style in middleweight Kalervo Rauhala . It is therefore not surprising that he and his brother Pekka Rauhala, who was a year younger than him, also began wrestling as a youth at the Teuvan Rivakka wrestling club in 1966 . He specialized fully in free style and was already very successful as a teenager at the Finnish championships in the respective age groups. The coaches to whom he owed the most were Veikko Rauhala u. Toivo Sillanpää.

In the seniors, Jukka Rauhala won his first Finnish championship title in flyweight at the age of 17 in 1976. By 1988 this was followed by eight more titles. In 1977 he won the bantamweight title in front of his brother Pekka, whom he defeated in a "brother duel" in the final.

Jukka Rauhala made his debut at international championships in 1979 at the EC featherweight championships in Manchester . There he came second behind the German champion Michael Kuhn . At the European Championships in 1981 in Łódź , Jukka Rauhala was also quite successful, because he came in an excellent 4th place in the lightweight and defeated, among others, the German champion Karl-Heinz Ruch from Aldenhoven and the strong Turkish Fevzi Şeker . But he was defeated by Mikhail Tscharatschura from the USSR and against Eberhard Probst from Halle (Saale) .

He also achieved good placements at the European Championships in Varna in 1982 and in Jönköping in 1985 . In Varna he finished 5th and in Jönköping 6th, both in the lightweight category. The climax of Jukka Rauhala's career was the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . He won the bronze medal there with four victories . Among his four victories were three points successes, for which he was burdened with one missing point, so that a point defeat against the American Andrew Rein in the 5th round caused his elimination before the final. He could therefore no longer fight for the gold medal against the South Korean You In-Tak .

In the years 1985 to 1988 Jukka Rauhala was unable to win another medal at the international championships. However, he achieved excellent results at the following championships: 4th place at the 1986 European Championships in Athens , 5th place at the 1986 World Championships in Budapest , 4th place at the 1987 European Championships in Tampere and 6th place at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . At these championships it was above all the top talent Arsen Fadsajew from the USSR and Simeon Schterew from Bulgaria who prevented Jukka Rauhala from achieving greater success.

After the Olympic Games in 1988, Jukka Rauhala ended his wrestling career, unlike his brother Pekka, who was still active until the Olympic Games in 1992. He completed his studies and is now a qualified engineer and works in the field of computer science ( Nokia ). From 1993 to 1996 he was a member of the Finnish Olympic Committee. In wrestling, he is still involved as a trainer in the youth field. He also sits on the committee of the European wrestling association CELA.
