David (Dave) McKay (born March 1, 1960 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian wrestler . Olympic athlete in 1984 and 1988 in free style.

Career

Dave McKay grew up in North Kildonan and was a versatile athlete as a teenager. He played ice hockey, soccer, judo and wrestled. It was not until he was 17 that he specialized entirely in wrestling. He first attended Manitoba University , but then moved to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby , because wrestling was better promoted there. He also became a member of the Burnaby Montain Wrestling Club (BMWC) . His trainer was Mike Jones. As a junior he was still active in both styles, but as a senior he concentrated entirely on the free style. In 1977 he achieved his first major success by winning the Canadian Junior Championship.

In 1978 he started for the first time at an international championship, the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Colorado Springs . He took 3rd place in the weight class up to 65 kg, behind the American Mark Norcia and the Panamanian Lucio Metia. In 1979 he went to the Pan American Junior Championships in Monterrey , Mexico in both styles in lightweight to the start. In the Greco-Roman style, he took 2nd place behind Gregorio Flores from Venezuela , while he came 4th in the free style.

As a senior, he stayed behind Joe Dell'Aquila at the Canadian championships from 1980 to 1982 and has therefore not yet been used in any international championships. That changed in 1983, because in that year he became Canadian champion in the free style in the lightweight and was then sent to the World Championships in Kiev . In Kiev he took a good 7th place in tough competition.

In 1984 he prevailed at the Canadian elimination tournament for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the lightweight against Pat Sullivan . In Los Angeles he only won his first fight against Zammit from Malta. Against Rene Neyer from Switzerland and against Zsigmond Kelevitz from Australia he suffered defeats and therefore only finished 12th.

1985 Dave McKay had to let Pat Sullivan go to the Canadian Championships. He then won these championships again in 1986. At the 1986 World Championships in Budapest he achieved a very good result in the lightweight with 6th place. In the same year he celebrated a tournament victory in the lightweight at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh , where he won against Zsigmond Kelevitz u. Steven Cooper from England placed.

At the 1987 World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand it was enough for Dave McKay only for the 10th place in the lightweight. In 1988 he managed to qualify again for the Olympic Games in Seoul . In Seoul he showed very good fights and just missed a medal with 5th place. There he defeated Al-Masri, Jordan a . Daniel Santoro , France , then lost to Chris Brown from Australia , triumphed over Fewzi Seker from Turkey and Alexander Leipold from Germany , before losing his fights again against Nate Carr from the United States and Park Jong-soon from South Korea . In the battle for 5th place, he defeated Jukka Rauhala from Finland on points.

After these Olympics, he ended his career as an active wrestler. But he remained loyal to wrestling as a coach. First as the head coach of Douglas College in New Westminster , British Columbia and for many years as the national coach of the Canadian freestyle team. He still holds this office today (2009).
